The enigmatically vague purevolume site says only that “This is the original tape Troy made to his girlfriend Melissa on their 6 month anniversary. She left him 3 days after.” This aura of mysticism, combined with an impressive amount of word-of-mouth linkage, made an almost unimaginably embarrassing “mixtape of love” the #1 viewed unsigned artist on purevolume. More than a month after its initial appearance, the site still gets thousands of hits a day.
The tape itself is an excruciating, 14-minute long ode from Troy to Melissa, complete with lengthy spoken word sections about how they were meant to be, a capella renditions of K-Ci & Jo-Jo and R. Kelly, and other examples of how love makes us all simpering, long-winded fools.
How the tape came to be remains up for contention. The site says Troy and Melissa are from Boise, ID, and forum posts from alleged friends of those involved seem to confirm that. Apparently, acquaintances of Melissa found a blank CD-R containing the ramblings of the unfortunate, lovestruck young man. Copying it for their friends, the track was soon put up for all to hear. Quickly it became an internet phenomenon, spawning remixes, of all things (an example).
This huge success, despite the fact that there is little more to the mixtape than a purevolume site and a brief sentence of explanation, rests on the revealing and hearbreakingly genuine nature of the 14-minute epic. Rarely has such pure, unchecked emotion gone into any form of art, ever. Everyone can relate in some fashion to the pathetic clinginess, and rest easily knowing that someone has gone further in obsession than they have (including, in Troy’s case, an unendingly creepy fixation on hands).
Yes, some may call listening to this scavenging the depths of human misery. Or sarcastically question how it took Melissa three days to break up with him. But there’s that uncomfortable, nagging feeling that we’ve been in Troy’s shoes. We can relate, and it makes it all the more perfect. 10/10
dude, i am one of troys good friends and just found out about this the other week. it’s pretty damn funny i will admit and i gave him some good shit for it too. actually, melissa’s new boyfriend put it up, and he infact made a video out of it too because it was soo funny. the video was filmed and edited by ethan, another good friend of mine. it’s only funny to the point that the rumors are true, but what they don’t tell you is that troy actually beat cheeks with this broad months and months after this occured. it’s great. well, just a little insite.

Alas, the mystery is now gone, as one of Troy’s friends has left a message on the review: dude, i am one of troys good friends and just found out about this the other week. it’s pretty damn funny i will admit and i gave him some good shit for it too. actually, melissa’s new boyfriend put it up, and he infact made a video out of it too because it was soo funny. the video was filmed and edited by ethan, another good friend of mine. it’s only funny to the point that the rumors are true, but what they don’t tell you is that troy actually beat cheeks with this broad months and months after this occured. it’s great. well, just a little insite. […] One of our most popular articles is a rave review of Troy’s Mixtape of Love. For the uninitiated, TMoL was a mysterious, genre-defying, 14-minute love song for the titular hero’s soon-to-be ex-girlfriend. Quickly becoming an internet phenomenon after being posted on purevolume.com, it still remained an enigma, with no more than a line or two of explanation on the site. […]
