Italian Blog ‘Indie For Dummies‘ took the liberty of asking over 150 blogs around the internet (a drop in the bucket I’m sure) for their top 10s and tallied them all up. Check it out most expeditiously here.
Here is my own personal Top Ten of 2005 and how they correlate to the Top 100 list
10. Calexico | Iron & Wine - In The Reins (27)
9. Architecture In Helsinki - In Case We Die (20)
8. Andrew Bird - The Mysterious Production of Eggs (25)
7. Eisley - Room Noises (x, This was my ‘Out of Left Field’ Pleasure of the year. It gets better each listen)
6. Final Fantasy - Has A Good Home!!!!!!! (79)
5. Spoon - Gimme Fiction (7)
4. The New Pornographers - Twin Cinema (8)
3. The Boy Least Likely To - The Best Party Ever (64, it should have been much higher)
2. The Decemberists - Picaresque (3)
1. Sufjan Stevens - Illinois (1)
If you don’t think Illinois deserves top billing this year, please weigh in on why in the comments section, or join our forums. Allow me to fire the first shot: Illinois functions, front to back as a compelling narrative telling of the woes and triumphs of our country’s 21st state. Taken singularly, the full songs are catchy, solemn, tear-jerking, and uplifting. The so-called ‘filler’ tracks between, turn an album of singles into the compendium of emotion Stevens has gleaned from the Prairie State.
Illinois is clearly the best. I don’t think Picaresque ought to be so high, though. Andrew Bird was better, not to mention John Vanderslice. I also think Mountain Goats, Go Team, and Wolf Parade deserve mention.
Talking bout my list or the top 100?
Wow, Eisely? For real? Nah, you’ve got to be kidding. That stuff makes me gag. They have all the sophistication and lasting impact of, I don’t know, Hansen, mabye. Other than that, a good list though. Well, except the Final Fantasy.. and Where’s Black Sheep Boy and Superwolf? Where’s Awesomer and Martha Wainwright and Black Mountain?
Seriously, Eisely? I keep hoping they will get raptured while performing at the Mall.
I definitely think wolf parade deserves a mention. Illinois is for sure the best album of the year though, I don’t think anyone can really argue against that. I would have put Andrew Bird and Final Fantasy a bit higher, but a great list for sure.
I was talking out of my butt when I said “except final fantasy” - I thought it was some electronica video game music. My apologies. I heard the album and it is excellent!
I firmly stand by my opinion on Eisley, however
I’ve got to say, Walter, that I’m a little disappointed in you. Eisley over Okkervil River? The Earth just fell a bit off its axis - way to go, champ.
