I’ve been thinking about upgrading lately.
I practically stole a new reciever from my friend at Fry’s for 90 bucks, and it set the wheels a turnin’. I want a new computer. Dual core athlon with dual monitors? Costly! I am not sure how long it’ll even be until I have money for one monitor. While I poured over deal after deal getting an idea of how much I was going to spend on a computer in time, one thought never entered my head until recently:’Try going Mac.’
A recent Slashdot article discusses how this year has seen over 1 million switches over to Mac from the fairly standard and boring titled ‘PC’ platform. Let’s face it, Macintosh Apples taste delicious whereas PC sounds like an early 90s horror. Plus the thought of a Confabulator widgit for Konfabulator(total coincidence!) residing at its leisure is lovely.
I implore the kind readership to send me their views on whether I should go Mac or stay in the PC realm. I plan to use the new machine to watch movies, edit audio, play games, internet, listen to music and such. Digital audio out is a must, and video editing will likely be done as well. The two most convincing people will win a badge/button mailed to them that say something like “I (heart) Windows/Apple”. a $1.50 value!
This contest is open to people who have mailing addresses and will end Midnight PST, November 30. Send your entries to walter [at] confabulators.com .
Go Apple. You will never regret it. The Macintosh is a far superior operating system with amazing capabilities that far surpass anything Windows will be able to offer in the next several years. Definetly it will have superior powers for all of the tasks you mention and will not dissapoint. I was in your boat just over a year ago and had never even thought about going mac but once I did a little research there was no turning back, I had to go mac. If you are not a pc gamer (which is the only possible downside of switching) then there is no question about whether you should switch. I hopefully look forward to welcoming you into the Macintosh community.
I’m a recent convert to Mac. i was pretty hesitant, but i LOVE my mac. i use it for internet, documents, music listening and making (Garageband)… i haven’t done any editing so i can’t comment there, but i love my mac… just go to a mac store and bask in it if you have to! ha, but i highly rec macs
if you ever want to be able yo play a game, mac is not the way to go, for all other reasons, go for it.
I switched to mac a about a year ago and it is probably one of the best decisions I’ve made in the past year. Macs just flat out work like there supposed to, something that PC’s always seem to have problems with. There are hardly any virus/spyware that infects a mac. I do quite a lot of video editing, and Final Cut is a very powerful program. Unless you like to play games, Mac is far superior.
i switched over to a mac about a year and a half ago, and i definitely don’t regret it in the least. i got tired of dealing with constant PC headaches, so i switched over, and it’s been pretty smooth sailing ever since.
i’m waiting until the new intel macs come out before i buy an apple desktop (i currently use a powerbook g4) but once they do, i’ll be sure to get on those as well.
pcs aren’t bad if you take care of them, they just need a lot more taking care of than macs.
also - to Aaron and keruano - macs have starcraft, and unreal tournament 2004. seriously, what else do you need? (honestly, yeah, pcs have more games, but most titles worth playing are out for macs too).
and hell, as long as we’re talking OSes, ever try a linux variation? i’ve given unbuntu a test drive, and i liked what i saw. it’s no OS X, but once i retire my windows box at home you can bet unbuntu is going on it.
your ipod and computer would match and be all pretty together if you got an apple!

You win right their.
Only kidding, but hey it’s a good point. If you get an imac the ipod will indeed match the apple.
I’ve been an Apple user all my life (and have versed myself with Windows Operating Systems over and over again) and wouldn’t have it any other way. Yes you can have a windows machine as stable as a box running OS X… but it requires so much effort to keep your precious windows (could always run linux or other nix variant) from harm or being infiltrated by outside badness. OS X is probably the most stable commerical consumer level operating system out there (the Server version is pretty badass too btw)… its a mistake for not having switched sooner. Oh and please don’t spend tons of money with Apple upgrades (i.e. more ram through their store)… you can buy any PC parts, hard drives, ram (not video cards) and throw em in your Mac as long as you are putting the right stuff in. Oh and any DVI monitor will do (unless you’re getting an iMac), no need for an Apple one (they look pretty sure) but they usually aren’t the highest quality and cost waaaaay too much.
It is funny how only people who don’t know how to use a computer have problems with pc machines.
One thing that bothers me:
Money: True windows may only update once in a blue moon, but at least it’s an update. They don’t make you shell out 100 - 200$ every year just so you can get a new dashboard.
to borrow a quote: The problem is that Apple must trumpet each release as loudly as possible, in order to derive as much immediate upgrade revenue as possible from Tiger. Unlike Windows, Mac OS X doesn’t ship on over 50 million PCs a year, so Tiger’s retail success is far more important to Apple than Windows’ retail success is to Microsoft. Fortunately, Apple fans have always proven themselves to be suckers for the latest and greatest: I expect millions of Mac users to upgrade immediately to Tiger.
