Torrent it!
Trawling the web for good music is tough business. Whether the net you cast is large or small, you always get approximately the same amount of stuff in each load: a lot of mediocre stuff, some really excellent stuff and some really terrible stuff. When I came across Childish Gambino.com, I wasn’t quite sure what to make of it. A new website that holds a blogger account that promises the musical stylings of an extended family, only one member of which has posted anything to listen to. Mc DJ offered the fruits of his three week venture into transfiguring Sufjan Stevens’ latest into a drums and bass adventure.
I’m a little weird when it comes to albums. I can’t just listen to one out of order. Especially if it would be the first time I listened to it. So I emailed, asking for the remaining tracks and waited. So patiently. When I received a reply and then the remaining tracks I was overjoyed, but it was late, so I settled for ID3 tagging the files and listening to it as if I had the CD in my hands the next morning. mc DJ was gracious enough to offer cover art which pretty much sealed the deal on my excitement of listening to it.
I use Foobar2000 now to listen to music. It’s so customizable that I didn’t start using it until my friend set his up and I stole his set-up. So I’ve got it set up similar to iTunes but with a visualization window next to the album art which is displayed above the listing window. So album art is important to have! I cued up Illin-Noise! and sat back not knowing what to expect. Fifty-five minutes later, I sat, a tad shell shocked from listening to an excellent take on one of the best albums of 2005. Okay, I wasn’t exactly shaking and pale, but I felt like it was a better use of my morning than sleeping in (sweet precious dreams, how I love thee).
Believe me when I say this album is far more than a simple “I just pitched it up 10% and added my favorite jungle tempo beat behind it.” The mood set in ‘Tower’ just makes me quiver each time. A+
about the artist:
McDJ is an artist who I’m waiting to hear back from regarding their background and such. Just imagine that here you’re reading a paragraph about their influences/DJing sets and other such ballyhoo. Also, probably a teaser for the Fiona Apple album they remixed already. Oh and a story about monkeys, knives, and fighting. Yeah!
Nothing too unique or revolutionary, but it’s nice to see what can be done by just changing the tempo of the vocals or instruments, and putting a little synthesized doo-dee-doo, tum-ta-tum over top. Also notable is that the intent of the original pieces isn’t obscured or changed in the slightest. A solid, enjoyable listen.
