Another round of layoffs at Kodak causes doubts within the industry whether photographic film is in it’s dying days. From BBC News:

Kodak to slash 10,000 extra jobs Eastman Kodak is cutting up to 10,000 more jobs than previously announced as its traditional film business continues to struggle in the digital world. In January last year, Kodak said it would cut its global workforce by up to 15,000, but now its wants to cut more jobs to speed up its move into digital. Restructuring costs pushed Kodak into a net loss of $146m (£84m) in the second quarter, after a $136m loss last year. However, digital sales in the quarter rose by 43%, the company said.

This news come as a blow to the thousands of industry professionals who rely on Kodak film to create their photos and films. Although Digital Video technology still has yet to come close to the definition and accuracy of photochemical film it’s low cost and easy adaptability are factors in it’s rise as an industry standard. Film, which uses photosensitive particles of silver halite to create an image with a molecular level of detail is still the industry standard in 35mm form. Because Film uses a chemical process to trap the ‘light imprint’ of a scene it captures an image in a clearer and more natural way than digital film which uses colored pixels to represent an image. While digital film appeals more to amateur filmmaker’s and photographers because of it’s cheap cost industry professionals usually prefer film because of it’s incredible detail and scalability. It has yet to be seen whether digital and photographic film can live peacefully side by side or if the new round of Kodak layoffs are early warning signs of it’s demise.

Not to pick holes or anything, but the piccie you have up is a Canon XL2 DIGITAL VIDEO camera: hence, not film.

I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you. Seriously though, I’d lose my job. 14th September, head honcho’s announcing in New York. We’re doing it on the 15th in London. It’s good, believe me.
